User Guide
Accessing and using the Shine union list database
There are 2 ways of accessing the Shine union list database:
- Via the homepage of the Shine website (www.shinelib.org.uk) using the Union List of Periodicals link
- By typing the URL directly http://www.slainte.org.uk/shinemember/service/servindex.cfm (Shine members contact the working group for password details):
The database is split into 3 sections:
- members access - use this link to access information for photocopying requests
- public access - this link is publically available and provides holdings/journal information
- database maintenance - use this link when updating information about your library or your holdings (be careful not to interfere with other libraries' information)
Members' access
Members' access is available in either of 2 ways:
- Via the homepage of the Shine website (www.shinelib.org.uk) and Union List of Periodicals Members' link
- By typing the URL directly (Shine members contact the working group for password details) http://www.slainte.org.uk/shinemember/service/servindex.cfm
This section will enable you to locate a particular journal title and to view the libraries that hold the title. The libraries' contact details are also displayed.
For ease of identification, each library is distinguished by a unique Shine code.
A library can be contacted by email or 'phone to make a Shine request. The Shine request should be processed on the day that the request is made. Where possible and within copyright, a Shine library will agree to fulfil a particularly urgent request by faxing or scanning.
Libraries use Shine numbers as payment for photocopying article requests. Numbers can be purchased from the union list administrator, Dr Michael Wells m.wells0@talk21.com
Participant libraries receive payment of 1 Shine number when fulfilling an article request. Provider libraries receive payment of 2 Shine numbers.
50 Shine numbers cost £58. 58 used numbers can be exchanged for 50 new numbers, or 50 numbers can be redeemed for £50.
By charging for the cost of making an article copy, the Shine numbering scheme ensures that Shine complies with the conditions of Fair Dealing as stated in the 1988 Copyright Designs and Patents Act (UK).
Database Maintenance
The maintenance page is available at www.slainte.org.uk/shinemember (Shine members contact the working group for password details) and lets you amend details of your library and holdings. The link is also available from the Shine website via the Union List of Periodicals Members' link.
Please take care when using these options as it is possible to change the details of any of the libraries and holdings.
There are certain functions that can only be performed by the union list working group, such as adding a title that does not currently exist on the database. Feel free to contact the union list working group if you have any queries.
A help facility is available on each page, or feel free to contact the union list working group with any queries.
Please notify the Union List Working Group if any information on this page is not accurate.
