Accessing and using the Shine union list database
There are 2 ways of accessing the Shine union list database:
- Via the homepage of the Shine website (www.shinelib.org.uk)
- By typing the URL directly: http://scone.strath.ac.uk/shinestaff/service/ServIndex.cfm
The database is split into 3 sections:
- members access - use this link to access information for photocopying requests
- public access - this link is publically available and provides holdings/journal information
- database maintenance - use this link when updating information about your library or your holdings (be careful not to interfere with other libraries' information)
Members' access
Members' access is also available in 2 ways
- Via the homepage of the Shine website (www.shinelib.org.uk)
- By typing the URL directly http://scone.strath.ac.uk/shinestaff/service/ServIndex.cfm(requires login)
This section will enable you to locate a particular journal title and to view the libraries that hold the title. The libraries' contact details are also displayed.
A list of the holdings is also available in pdf format from the Shine website.
For ease of identification, each library is distinguished by a unique Shine code.
A library can be contacted by email or 'phone to make a Shine request. The Shine request should be processed on the day that the request is made. Where possible, a Shine library will agree to fulfil a particularly urgent request by faxing or scanning.
Participant libraries provide each other [or other participant libraries] article photocopies without the need for payment
Provider libraries (marked with a £) require 2 Shine numbers for each article requested.
A provider library will pay a participant library with one Shine number when requesting an article from the participant library.
Numbers can be purchased from the union list administrator, Dr Michael Wells m.wells0@talk21.com
50 Shine numbers cost £50. 58 used numbers can be exchanged for 50 new numbers.
Database Maintenance
The maintenance page is available at http://scone.strath.ac.uk/shinestaff/ownmenu.cfm (same password details) and lets you amend details of your library and holdings. The link is also available from the Shine website.
Please take care when using these options as it is possible to change the details of any of the libraries and holdings.
There are certain functions that can only be performed by the union list administrators, such as adding a title that does not currently exist on the database. Feel free to contact the administrators if you have any queries.
A help facility is available on each page, or feel free to contact the union list working group with any queries.
