Hazel Williamson Bursary
The Hazel Williamson Bursary is awarded annually in memory of Hazel Williamson, who was an active and enthusiastic member of the SHINe Committee. The award is made to support fees associated with a professional development activity, up to a maximum of £500. In the past, recipients of the award have attended conferences or study days which will benefit the recipient and their SHINe colleagues. Recipients are asked to write a report of their activities for the SHINe Journal.
Last year’s winner was Kathleen Irvine from the Highland Health Sciences Library who attended a conference on storytelling and narrative in healthcare. Kathleen’s thought provoking report of this conference was published in the SHINE Journal in September 2007. And she will be heading to the HLG conference this summer to follow through her ideas, taking them to a wider audience with an intriguingly titled showcase “Were you afraid of the librarian too? Harnessing peer support via digital storytelling?”. We wish her every success with this.
So onto this year’s submissions, the Committee was a little disappointed to only receive one entry for the bursary this year, but that didn’t detract from the quality of the bid. It was agreed that the 2008 Bursary should be awarded to Elspeth Lee, Library Services Manager at Kings Cross Hospital in Dundee to attend the Health Libraries Group Conference in Cardiff.
The Committee looks forward to seeing Elspeth's attendance at the HLG Conference be of value in her career and to the wider SHINe membership. Congratulations Elspeth.

Thanks from Lynn Easton
I have been on the SHINe Committee for the last 6 years and have benefited from having worked with some inspiring chairs, Margaret Forrest and Cathy Smith. I have also benefited in the last 2 years from working with my co-chair Andy, but, unexpectedly, the most memorable assistance from him has been how to write limericks and haikus. Thank you Andy your poetic talents are limitless.
I would also like to thank all the volunteers who have worked alongside me on the SHINe Committee from the days when I represented SPHeN the Scottish Public Health Evidence Network to the current crop of talented Committee members. The Committee members have been essential to keep the co-chair’s egos from inflating too much and for that I’m sure myself and Andy are truly grateful.
Ultimately I have really enjoyed working for SHINe members on the Committee and I look forward to seeing Joanna doing her very best too.
Thank you.
