The Quick and the Duff - Helping Our Users Get the Best from the Web
06:00, October 29, 2009, University of the West of Scotland, Paisley Campus Library
ISG (Scotland) Study Day 2009
How do we help our users navigate the immense amount of information available on the web?
What do web researchers need from us? Do they need us at all?
How are web providers selecting and making available good content?
What are the issues for librarians at the sharp end?
The ISG (Scotland) Study Day 2009 aims to help us answer these questions and provide a forum for discussion of the issues facing library professionals as they strive to help users to the best information.
Dave Errington, CEO of Talis, will set the scene by looking at the future shape of web searching. Andy Cannon, a regular user of the web for research purposes and Artistic Director of Wee Stories theatre company, will talk about his experience of using the web and using libraries and tell us what more we can do for him, and Louise Thornton of BBC Scotland Learning will talk about the selection and organisation of learning materials on the BBC website. Finally, a practising librarian (speaker to be confirmed) will speak about their day-to-day experience working with users. A final panel session will allow us to draw together the day's themes in open discussion.
